Precision irrigation powered by IoT

Turning raw irrigation data into simple, actionable insights for farmers.

Outgrow's smart irrigation system generated real-time soil and environmental data. My role was to transform that raw data into a clear, farmer-centered experience that could support fast decisions in the field.

The Transformation

01 — Context + Problem

Raw IoT irrigation data meant nothing without a way to read it.

Outgrow generated real-time IoT sensor data, but raw data isn't a decision.

Farmers needed to glance at the experience and immediately understand what was happening with their crops and what action to take. The experience needed to work for farmers in the field, not feel like a generic analytics dashboard adapted for agriculture.

01

Turn Data Into Insight

Real-time sensor data needed to become visual, understandable information rather than a wall of numbers.

02

Design for the Field

Farmers needed to make decisions quickly, often without time to interpret complex charts or navigate multiple screens.

03

Make It Locally Relevant

The experience needed to reflect farmers' existing mental models, familiarity and working context.

How Might We?

How might we turn complex IoT data into simple, crop-specific guidance that helps farmers make confident irrigation decisions?

02 — Role & Ownership

I designed the experience from data → insight → action.

I owned the farmer-facing experience, from understanding the problem through interaction design, visual design and usability validation.

  1. 01

    Turned Data Into Insight

Translated raw IoT sensor data into clear, at-a-glance visualizations.

  2. 02

    Designed for the Field

Prioritized fast comprehension and decision-making over dashboard density.

  3. 03

    Created a Locally Relevant Experience

Used familiar visual language and agricultural context rather than generic analytics patterns.

  4. 04

    Validated With Real Farmers

Tested the experience with 15 farmers in Nashik and used their feedback to drive iterations.

03 — Research + Insights

The research changed what we chose to show.

We combined competitive analysis, product exploration and usability testing with 15 farmers in Nashik, including 10 who had experience with competitor apps.

  1. 01

Farmers Understand Visual Conditions Faster Than Numbers

    Design Implication

Represent soil moisture visually rather than relying on charts and percentages.

  2. 02

Farmers Need an Answer, Not Just Information

Knowing soil moisture is useful. Knowing what to do about it is more useful.

    Design Implication

Make irrigation recommendations prominent and actionable.

  3. 03

    Familiarity Reduces Cognitive Effort

Farmers already understand concepts such as soil condition, crop health and water requirements.

    Design Implication

Use familiar visual metaphors instead of technical dashboard conventions.

Core Design Principle

“Don't make farmers interpret the data. Help them understand the situation and decide what to do next.”

04 — Design Decisions

From data-heavy dashboard to actionable farming experience.

  1. 01

    Visual Soil

    Problem

Traditional charts made soil moisture difficult to interpret quickly.

    Decision

Created a visual soil representation that communicates condition directly, instead of asking farmers to interpret a number.

    • Dry
    • Optimal
    • Wet

    Visual Soil Indicator

    1. Data
    2. Visual Condition
  2. 02

    Recommendation-First Hierarchy

    Problem

Important information was competing with secondary metrics.

    Decision

The interface prioritizes the recommendation while keeping detailed IoT information accessible.

    1. Current Condition
    2. What It Means
    3. What to Do
    4. Supporting Data

    “What should I do now?”

  3. 03

    Farm → Plot → Crop → Action

    Problem

Farmers needed context before understanding the data.

    Decision

Structured the primary experience around their natural decision flow, creating a clearer information hierarchy without adding unnecessary complexity.

    1. Farm
    2. Plot
    3. Crop
    4. Growth Stage
    5. Condition
    6. Recommendation
  4. 04

Design for Different Levels of Digital Literacy

Instead of relying on numbers alone, the interface combines multiple cues to communicate the same information.

    • Visual
    • Icon
    • Label
    • Recommendation

05 — Final Experience

A dashboard designed to be understood at a glance.

  1. 01

Understand — Farm & Crop Overview

Farmers can immediately identify Farm → Plot → Crop → Growth Stage.

Outgrow Smart Irrigation Planner — farm, plot and crop overview
  2. 02

Diagnose — Visual Soil & Crop Health

Soil moisture and crop condition are translated into visual states that are easier to scan than raw sensor values.

    • Dry
    • Optimal
    • Wet

  3. 03

    Act — Irrigation Recommendation

The interface answers the most important question: “What should I do now?”

06 — Impact

The result wasn't more data. It was better decisions.

30%

45%

Reduction in Navigation Time

Important information became easier to find.

15

Key Takeaway

Key Takeaway

“The best agricultural dashboard isn't the one with the most data — it's the one a farmer can understand in the field without stopping to think.”
